Pulse With the Beat by UnknownRandomness

Run for the Hills

A/N: This story will be a series of oneshots inspired by various pieces, and as such, probably won't be related in any way! :) This chapter is quite different to what I usually write, but I hope you enjoy it and please leave a review.

Prompt: Howl- Florence and the Machine

Her breath came in heavy pants, her eyes never stopped moving as she ran through the dense undergrowth. Limbs ached as fatigue set in... but she would not stop.

It was calling her. The sound of loneliness. She would never stop, wouldn't let her lungs betray her whilst they still had the capacity to power her body. However far she had to travel, she would make it. Alone, with others, it didn't matter. Nothing mattered except the sound that called to the marrow in her bones.

Friends had come and gone, unable to understand this drive that powered her. No one else could hear it, but that was of no consequence. It was for her and her alone, and if she didn't reach the source, she would die. It was as simple as that.

Time didn't register anymore... she had run from the well-worn path when the sun had been peeking through the misty clouds, and now it had long since fled from the encroaching darkness... billions of miniature suns lit her way now, but she didn't see their beauty for her eyes roved the close horizon, searching for a figure that wasn't there.

But she was getting closer. Inexorably, her journey was coming to an end.

The woman hesitated.

She had been running for so long now... what would she find when she stopped? What if this beat she had been following led to an empty void? How would she survive the disappointment?

Small fronds of plants eagerly tried to block her view, without success. The pulse was raging in her head, louder than ever before- it was louder than thunder, louder than cannon-fire, it was all-encompassing, all-powerful. It was omnipresent and yet, nowhere at all.

Breaking through the forest, moonlight hit her skin as the sound was silenced. The silence was deafening, her lungs burned as she stared at the grassy plain.

A figure stood there, bathed in white fire... he was fire, a celestial creature that made her eyes burn with his intense light. He turned to her and his golden eyes took her breath away.

Her mouth opened and she paused, words on the tip of her tongue but refusing to spill from her lips. For so long this creature had called to her and she had answered with silence. Now, now she had the chance to make contact... and her soul was dormant.

His mouth opened, and she heard his intake of breath and she marvelled at how such a godly creature could deign to breath such common air. She couldn't let him speak first, it wasn't his duty but hers!

"Hello." Said Kagome.

The god threw back his head and howled.
