All righty. This was never supposed to happen, but here it is. A prologue. To a chapter story. When it was just supposed to be a one-shot songfic! *cries*

This is, a. based very loosely off of Is this All by Van Ness Wu, and b. dedicated to Theia, because she started this...trainwreck. Get ready, y'all. It's going to be interesting.

It was over. She held the pink little bauble, shining innocently yet malicious at heart, in her hands.

Her real life, the one everyone expected her to go back to, lay in shambles at her feet. Why would she want to go back? What did she have there but a failing high school transcript and friends moving on with their lives while she led a double life?

She didn’t wish to go back, but she had nothing here, either. Sango and Miroku were already planning their wedding and getting ready to settle down; Inuyasha had assumed she was returning to the future and made plans with Kikyou to settle down.

How he had thought she would return, she’d never known. Kagome had cooked for him, cared for him, traipsed around all of Japan plastered to his back, and he thought she’d just...leave him, just like that?

What a way for her first love to die in her heart. It wasn’t a slow death; rather, it was more like it fell off a cliff with a nice splat as it met the rocky ravine at the bottom.

There went her happy fairy tale, never mind the fact that she was living in one.

Hmph. Well, it’s not like she needed him anyways! She was a modern, twenty-first century woman! Independent! On her own!

In a fifteenth century world. Okay...maybe she needed someone. Else, she’d get all those comments...that she was already getting because of her SCHOOL outfit--not a whore’s outfit, thankyouverymuch--

Nrgh. Train of thought was not going anywhere.

Scrub thought-board clean.

Take a deep breath.

“Alright,” she said determinedly. “The Jewel.”

Inuyasha looked at her. “The Jewel.”

Well wasn’t he just a smarty pants. Repetition. How original.

...

Okay, so maybe she was feeling a bit bitter.

A smidge.

Plus a pinch...

And maybe a teaspoon too.

Oh, all right. She was a bitter old biddy at the ripe old age of eighteen. What a great way to start the next chapter of her life. At least she had some nice man flesh to oogle while her metaphorical house that represented her life fell around her in shambles.

Ah, yes.

Sesshomaru.

Long, silky silver hairy the color of moonbeams that always looked better than hers, pristine, flawless complexion, sexy-ass figure. Honestly, if he could fly--and run, and hit people with swords all day--then how built must he be under all those clothes? Pretty damn built, if you asked her. And he...he was dependable. Never wavered in his path, never changed his loyalty if he gave it to someone, never deviated from the path.

She should have fallen for him and just let him kill her, because that’s what he did best, anyways, and then it would have been fine. Just...fine. Not this.

Not this horror show.

“Oi, Kagome.” Inuyasha shook her shoulder. “Stop staring at the bastard and get on with the Jewel!”

Oh, right. That. The Jewel. The thing she’d broken. All the lives that were taken because  of her mistake.

All those people that had died...

“It’s all your fault!” Accusing faces, stained with tears.

She could feel herself crumbling on the inside. Nothing to hope for, nothing to want for. Her dreams smashed, her real life in shambles.

“Kagome!”

She glanced absentmindedly at him. “Hm?”

Inuyasha took an involuntary step back at the bleak look in her eyes. It was like her light was gone, extinguished. When had she turned into this? How had he missed it?

“Hey, wench...” he said more gently. “You wanna make a wish on the dammed thing or not?”

A wistful look passed over her face, fleeting as a running deer, and then it was gone. “‘Spose I should.” She hefted the thing in her hand.

This thing...it ruined my life.

Wasn’t she supposed to feel obligated to make her once-love happy, and wish for Kikyou to come back? Wasn’t she supposed to do something meaningful, make it all right again?

“You’re the one that broke the Jewel! You killed all of them, you stupid little girl.”

Wish everything hadn’t happened?

She closed her eyes. “I wish...I wish everything was okay again!”

And then she was gone.
