Chapter One

He could no longer remember how many years it has been since the day he lost his soul to the devil. Years? Decades? Centuries? In all truth, it no longer mattered. Ever since he made that agreement, nothing has been the same. He wanted power, it was his soul desire, and it had cost him dearly.

His wife had died that night due to his request. The man who had approached him, granting him that which he demanded, demanded her life in return. It had been an easy proposition to take. For in order to retrieve the power he wanted, he needed to give up on life in whole. His wife had never been an easy woman to digest. There marriage was more of an alliance among rule anyhow. After he would retrieve the strength he needed, he would no longer require the alliance.

“I could grant your every wish,” the man whispered into the night as they stood within the cover of the forest, “I only ask for one thing alone.”

He scoffed at that. “One thing in order to gain everlasting power. What would you ask of me?”

The man dressed in black with eyes that glowed red like the blood of battle hissed out in pleased tones, “your mate.”

He had no mate, never lowering himself to take the woman he had married to bed. Humans were disgusting creatures. If not for the power he had received from the alliance, he never would have even agreed to the proposal.

“I have no mate, but the wife I was forced to receive may be yours.”

The red eyed devil mulled that over before agreeing to the offer. “Your wife as for now.”

That had been the night that sealed him to this hell. Yes, he had gained the power he had sought for, but the consequences where not what he had expected. In order to grasp the strength, the black coated man took his soul in turn, casting him forever into the night.

Now, he was the very creature that both the human world and youkai feared. That alone would have pleased him, but he lost his title in turn. His former cell of a body was dead now, retrieved by his guards and burned during his funeral. His wife had been burned by his side, and the sentiment had not appreciated.

No, he lost his life to that devil’s proposal. He lost his lands and his title. The west had fallen forever years after that night. The wolves of the east now scourge over it, a thought that does not please him. For as they roam his lands, he is left to this retched city that had risen into place. Humans swarmed all over, mixing themselves with hidden youkai that had lowered themselves to conceal their true forms.

He no longer rested among the living. That in itself had not bothered him for centuries. The loss of his lands and title no longer bothered him. He had the power he wanted, the strength to stand victorious against any foe. Yes, he was trapped to the night, craving the blood of the living, but neither of those two facts had bothered him in so long.

He had lived for centuries as this demonic creature, pleased by the shear fact that he was all mighty, but times have changed...

Deep golden eyes landed on the figure of a woman as she ran through the night, trying to escape the rain that grew steadily fiercer. Even through the distance, he could smell her sweet scent as it called out to him.

He hadn’t wished for his soul in centuries, but ever since he laid eyes on her just a few short days ago, he has been wishing he was once more back among the land of the living.

“Hey, Kagome,” a brown haired woman yelled as she trudged quickly through the downpour, “you running off to work?”

“Yeah, I need to get to the café before my boss has another fit.”

“He’s still hounding you?” the girl asked as the two woman walked across the bridge, happy to get a reprieve from the rain.

“Yeah,” she sighed. “I really don’t know what his deal is, Sango. Ever since he was transferred to our store, he’s been nothing but nice to everyone but me. I’ve been nothing but nice to him too.”

Sango just smiled at her friend. Kagome could be so blind sometimes. “Maybe he likes you,” she egged on, knowing damn well that her new boss had the hots for her.

“Please, Sango,” she scoffed, “he’s got every other girl in the shop gaping at him. I really doubt he’ll be interested in me. Hell, I’m not nearly as pretty as some of the other girls.”

“Don’t give me that, Kags,” she snapped, jabbing a finger into her friend’s arm. “You know damn well that you are hotter than most. Hell, I’m even jealous of you sometimes. The only thing those girls have going for them is that they are sluts, and even then I don’t really think that works out to their advantage.”

Kagome couldn’t do anything but laugh at that. “Yeah, some of them really are putting themselves out there.”

“I’m glad you see that,” Sango chuckled.

All too soon they were at the end of the bridge. The downpour was still waiting for them when they reached it, and neither of the two girls were excited about it. “You heading to class?” Kagome asked, delaying the inevitable.

“Yeah,” she smiled, “Miroku’s waiting for me. I think he’s getting ready to propose.”

“Oh, Sango,” Kagome beamed, hugging her friend close, “I’m so happy for you.”

“Don’t congratulate me yet,” she teased. “He hasn’t said anything.”

“Still, he would be a fool not to,” was her rebuff. “Do you have any idea when?”

“I think Friday. He has this whole big date planned that he’s been trying to keep secret. If it wasn’t for Inuyasha, I never would have found out.”

Kagome’s mood fell at the mention of her ex. They had been together for almost three years when he just one day changed on her. He suddenly became more possessive, yelling at her whenever she hung out with one of her male friends. He always wanted to know where she was at all times, something she didn’t have any issue with, but he took it to an extreme. She just couldn’t take it any longer, and left. That was almost eight months ago, and he was still bothering her.

“Sorry,” Sango muttered as she caught the look on her friend’s face, “I shouldn’t have”—

“No,” she smiled, “he’s Miroku’s best friend, there’s no way I can ask you to not talk about him. I’m just grateful Miroku keeps him in check as much as he does.”

“Yeah,” Sango sighed, frustrated just as much as her boyfriend is with his ‘brother’. “Well, I’ll see you at the café after my class.” Giving her friend a deep hug, both girls parted ways as their ran out into the rain.
