The Quad by Josie Knox
Chapter 01 ~ What On Earth Are They Doing
Hello, yes I'm actually going to finish this story! :) I'm going to start posting the chapters that I had up on Spark, edited of course. I also recommend that people who already know this story re-read. As some of you might remember I had a major problem with people's perception of the last few chapters, I didn't particularly want any of my characters to come off as criminals in this story, so while it's not drastic it is changed. After the old chapters are posted only two new ones are left, and one is already written. Enjoy!
Chapter 1
"The lab closes in ten minutes," Kagome announced to the room of students she was watching over, which was in fact, one person. This lone girl was the only student that had come into the all night. The bored lab assistant was currently sitting at her computer in the front of the room playing an 'exciting' game of solitaire, when suddenly she heard a voice.
"Excuse me, could you help me with something?"
"Sure, what seems to be the problem?"
"I'm trying to print and it keeps sending me here."
"Okay, may I see the mouse?" The girl nodded and moved slightly to the right. "My boss really needs to get someone in here to change the default printer on some of these computers. It should work now." Kagome said clicking the mouse a few times.
"Thanks." The girl replied as Kagome went back to her seat and immersed herself in her game once again.
"Could I ask you one more question," the girl asked again.
Kagome got up again, walked over to the girl, and stood behind her as she asked her next question. "We're supposed to publish our portfolios in Fetch and I'm not sure how."
"Sorry I'm not familiar with the all Mac's programs. The portfolios are specific to the teaching majors and a few other departments, but it's not something we do in my department. The UCS labs in the Teacher's College Room 709 should be able to help you tomorrow."
"Okay, thanks." That happened a lot here in the tech lab, she and her fellow lab assistants, while they did work in dorm computer labs, their job was to clean the lab, take head counts at a quarter till and a quarter after, and make sure the lab is stocked; oh and put paper in the printer. Actually she had said that several times; someone would have a question about the architectural design program and her reply was 'I just put paper in the printer.' Of course it got her a laugh from the guy, but it was still true. It was a great job, she was paid to play on the computer and answer occasional questions about Microsoft Word.
But now it was three in the morning and time to close up shop. All that is left of her day is a fifteen-minute walk across campus to her dorm then she was done for the night. The girl had finally left, and she as shutting down the last computer. She walked back to her computer and clocked out then shut it down. Grabbing her book bag and flipping the light switch off she walked out the door.
For three on a Tuesday morning she was surprised to see the six people that she had seen so far; it was usually dead right now. Soon she was coming into the Quad. Here she knew it was going to be void of any fellow college students. This was her third year on campus; she knew this place quite well. The Quad was just an open area with criss-crossing paths the cut through the trees. There were several benches that lined the paths and it was surrounded by four campus buildings. Her dorm was just beyond the Quad.
She had been told her freshman year that you should never walk through the Quad alone at night, it just wasn't safe; but walking around it was just a hassle and took her out of her way. So she and her roommate freshman year had decided on a happy medium. Don't walk down the middle of the Quad late at night, walk the outside path; and just to add to the cleverness of the plan there was a blue light station on that particular path. Blue lights are emergency call stations all over campus. If you're in trouble or just freaked out; look for the blue light, run, press the button and help is one the way.
Anyway Kagome was walking up the side of the Quad and rounding the corner coming to the backside of the Administration Building. This early in the morning the only lights on in any of the buildings were in the bright stairwells, but just as she came to a part of the building that was recessed back away from sidewalk she saw a dim office light shining through. She wandered under the glow of a light post when something caught her eye.
Someone was in the window, no two people. She stopped and watched; what on earth are they doing. Suddenly one head moved to the side; the other took the invitation swooped in. Kagome gasped just as she realized that the body in front was pounding into the one against the window over and over again.
"Oh.... Surely they're not. They can't be. But they are," she whispered. As if hearing her through the thick glass of the window and at least a two hundred foot distance from the building the man looked up over the woman's shoulder. He could clearly see the little slip of a female figure standing under the orange glow of the streetlight. Their eyes met and for several seconds Kagome was too stunned to move. He continued to stare at her over the woman's shoulder as he took her body over and over again; and by all means she looked like she was enjoying it. Her head was thrown back into the window rolling form side to side. Her arms and legs were wrapped around his body, one could only imagine the sounds the woman was making; but his attention was elsewhere. He never broke eye contact; but finally Kagome regained herself and realized that not only was she was staring at the couple, but she'd been caught doing it as well. She blushed bright red and walked quickly away from the scene.
Kagome dashed through the rest of the Quad and down the duel path that lead to the street. She easily made her way over, not ever having to stop for traffic since it was non-existent at this time in the morning. Coming to her building she opened the first door, and gave her id to the night-staff at the front desk; anyone coming into the building between midnight and six had to have their id's scanned to make sure they lived in the building. The id was scanned and she made her way to her room. She plopped down onto her bed with a sigh. "Wait until Sango and Kikyo hear this."
