Chapter 1
You know what? There’s nothing better than to do the job you love on a nice summer day. The weather is nice, the birds are singing, and I love the feel of car grease on my hands. Yeah, that’s right. I’m a mechanic and working on cars is my hobby and my passion. When you’re in this line of business, you have to love your work or else you’re going to do a crappy job on someone’s car.
Since I love my job, I’m really good at it. That’s why people come to me to fix their cars. That and I am the nearest mechanic in a 50-mile radius. I fix from Toyota to Benz and the year 1990 to present. I know I sound like an ad but how else am I going to talk about what I do and how much I love it.
My name is Kagome but everyone call me Kag. There’s nothing much left to say about me other than I’ve been living on the edge of Tokyo in a small town that’s hard to see on a map all my life. I’m 24 with a mechanic engineering degree and single.
I don’t get offensive talking about being single but I can’t help it. Men, now days, want women who spend 2 hours in front of the mirror before they go to the grocery store. They want the ones that wear the latest fashion and get their hair done twice a week.
Not me. I’m a ponytail, shirt and jeans wearing girl. It takes me thirty minutes, including bathing, to get ready to start my day. Who has the time? One look at me and men walk the other way but I don’t mind. I’m not looking for anyone anyway. I love being single!
Another thing about me is that I’m an inuyoukai. The only people that would know what I am are other demons and they can either smell my scent or feel my power. The reason for that is that I shielded my appearance so that I’d look like a human.
Sure, people know that demons exist but they don’t have to like us. There’s an anti-demon group that’s causing problems and recruiting more supporters everyday. Now if you ask me, I don’t want those people knocking on my door to try to shoot me like they tried last week at a wolf demon’s house.
Which is stupid considering demons are faster and deadlier. They were just lucky that the demon wasn’t home and only their human friend was. It’s better to have one dead human that a small group.
As I was tightening a spark plug, I heard an engine turn the corner down the street. It sounded like it belong to a 2010 Jag. I reveled in the sound of its engine purring until it pulled in the driveway of my garage. Which would be interesting because it didn’t sound like that was anything wrong.
I lifted my head from the hood of the car I was working on, to see who it was. I sniffed a little to see if I can catch a scent since the driver park in a spot that I couldn’t see in my position. I didn’t recognize the scent but I know it was male.
When he walked into my eyesight, my breath was caught in my throat. He was an inuyoukai! Now I know what you are going to say. I shouldn’t be surprised to see another on my kind but the truth is, I haven’t seen another inuyoukai for a long time. As far as I knew, I was the only one in the area.
“Hello.” I said as I wiped my hands cleans, just in case he wanted to shake hands. Something to me he wasn’t going to because he looked like a poster boy for Business Week Today. From the slick shine of his silver hair to press suit to his waxy shine shoes.
“Hello” he said back as he looked me over. I wondered how I should’ve taken that look. “What’s your name?”
“Kagome but everyone calls me Kag. Can I help you with something?”
“I’m new in the area so I’m taking a look around.”
“Well welcome. Where do you live?”
“I’m moving into the two story house on Night Street.”
“Really? Well that makes us neighbors. I live right next to you.”
I wanted to say Howdy Neighbor! But I didn’t know how well his humor was so I wasn’t going to try.
He nodded he’s head. “Good to know that I mechanic is near by just in case something happens to my car.”
“That will be awhile because your Jag is purring like a kitten.”
He chuckled and I shivered as it raced through me. That’s weird. “That’s because it’s new.”
“Ah. That must have been a pretty penny but you look like you can afford.”
“I’m a lawyer so I can afford a lot more than that.”
“I bet but you know. You never told me your name. Mr. –“
“Sesshoumaru.”
“THE Sesshoumaru? Of Inucorp? You’re the founder of the largest lawyer firm in Tokyo? What are you doing way out here in the country?”
“Peace and quiet. You can’t believe how much stress it is when living in the city.”
“You’re right, I don’t. I’ve never been to Tokyo or any other city for that matter.”
“Good, don’t. So do you read Business Weekly much?”
“No but my brother does. I read it from time to time when I’m bored. You don’t really need to read the magazine in order to know about you. It’s big news.” I can’t believe I didn’t recognize him off the bat.
He nodded and smirked. I had to struggle to stop my knees from buckling. The heck?
“So I guess I’ll see around neighbor.” He said as he walked back to the car.
“Yeah, sure.” I exclaimed dumbly. What’s wrong with me? I never acted this way around another man before. Let’s forget that he’s a man. He’s an inuyoukai after all but still. I should have more will power than this.
As he drove off, I didn’t know that our encounter with each other was going to turn my world upside down and bring me to places in my life that I’ve never been.
