An Interesting Surprise

Kagome stared at the stick for a full minute in awe.
"Well, that's interesting," she said aloud.
"What's it say?" her best friend shouted through the door. Kagome's eyes finally left the stick to look at the door where Sango was on the other side. She got up from her seat on the toilet and walked over to slowly open the door. The look of apprehension on Sango's face was enough to make her want to run back inside the bathroom and lock the door. She just handed her the stick. Sango took it and looked.
"Oh, Kagome, this is so great!" she exclaimed and hugged Kagome tightly, "You're gonna be a mother!" After those words left her mouth, it was like it had sunk in for Kagome, and a smile appeared on her face.
Sango pulled back and looked in her face. "So you're telling him, right?"
"Yeah, I'll tell him when he gets home--" And after she said those words, the key turned in the lock. Kagome gasped.
 "Get out," she quickly said.
 "What?"
"I can't tell him with you here. Get out," she said as she pushed Sango toward the back door. She realized she still held the pregnancy test in her hand and gasped again.
"Wait! Take this," she held it out to her.
 "What?! Why?"
"What if he finds it before I can tell him? Please?" Sango stared at the stick in Kagome's hands for a moment in disgust before snatching it, careful to avoid the recently peed on end.
 "Oh fine."
"Thank you! Now go. Go, go, go!" she said as she continued to push Sango out.
"I'm going!" she said leaving through the door, "Good luck!"
Kagome closed the door behind her and leaned against it as she let out a breath. She pushed herself confidently off the door and propelled herself forward to the front door where her husband was walking through with a few things from the convenient store.
 "Hi, Sesshomaru," she brightly said.
 "Hello, Kagome. Sango's here?"
 "Nope," she replied quickly.
 "But I thought I saw--"
 "She left."
"Ok," he said as he eyed her suspiciously. Sesshomaru closed the door and made his way towards the kitchen.
"Want me to make you something?" Kagome offered.
"No, that's alright. Are we still visiting your mother today?"
Kagome's eyes widened at his words. "Oh wow, I'd forgotten about that," she said as a hand flew to her mouth at her surprise. Sesshomaru placed the paper bag on the counter and turned back to face her while leaning back on it.
"'Forgotten about it'? How?" he asked in incredulity, "It's all you were talking about this week. To give your mother a great mother's day."
"Well, I know, but that was before--" Kagome stopped herself before she could say any more.
"Before..." Sesshomaru urged her to finish.
Kagome decided to play dumb. "Before?"
 "Before what?"
 "What?"
 "You brought it up."
 "Brought what up?"
"Kagome," Sesshomaru said in a tone Kagome knew meant not to test him.
"What?" Kagome tried to ask as innocently as possible.
"What happened?" Kagome's eyes shifted from to all around the room. She finally focused her gaze on him and nothing else.
"Well, it's nothing bad, so you don't need to worry about that." But knowing Kagome, it could be something horrible in everyone's eyes but her own and she's just brushing it off.
Sesshomaru crossed his arms. "Well, then what is it?"
"Well, I wasn't supposed to tell you like this."
"It does not matter. Tell me."
Kagome let out a frustrated breath, but became timid once again, shifting from foot to foot. She let out three garbled syllables into her fist that sounded nothing like she was meant to tell him, and then smiled at him. "There," she stated like it solved everything.
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed into little slits, and what gold was showing gleamed. Kagome let out a nervous laugh, and then proceeded to run to the nearest room she could reach before he could catch her. This particular room happened to be the closet below the stairs. But she was too slow and too weak for him, and she couldn't hold the door against his weight when he came in after her.
He closed the door and crossed his arms once again. "Now you will tell me what is going on," he demanded in the dark of the closet.
Kagome sighed again, but not in frustration this time. Something close to defeat. Or maybe relief. She uncrossed his arms for him by taking one of his hands and holding it over her stomach.
She looked to where she was sure his eyes were with her limited vision, but she knew he could see hers. "I'm pregnant," she softly said.
His eyes widened fractionally. Pregnant? Well, that's much better than anything he expected her to say. But pregnant? He didn't see this coming.
Sesshomaru lowered himself down to his knees, grasped her hips in his hands, and pressed his ear up against Kagome's stomach. He felt her silent laughs against the side of his face.
"Sessh, you can't hear anything. I only found out today." He shifted his head on her belly so his chin rested on it and he was looking up at her. "Today?" he questioned. She nodded with a smile on her face.
He stood back up, but his hands remained in place.
"So you're pregnant?" he asked in confirmation.
 "Yes."
"We're going to have a baby."
"Yes," she breathed with a bright smile on her face. Sesshomaru reached his arms around to hold Kagome tightly and bent his head down by hers. Kagome wrapped her arms around his neck and gripped onto his shoulders.
"Happy Mother's Day," he whispered into her ear.
