Breathe, her mind echoed. This was it. She had given the last performance of her program and was not awaiting the judges' scores. If she scored higher than Kagura, she'd make it onto the team for the Winter Olympics. The speaker came on, and her entire world stopped.
"The scores for Miss Higurashi Kagome are as follows: 68.5 for the short program and 112.7 for the long program, making her total score...181.2."
Cheers erupted from both the stands and the rest of her team. Her eyes began brimming with tears as they all came and hugged her. The speaker beeped in again to announce the women who made it onto the team for the Olympics.
"The skaters representing Japan in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver are...Miss Higurashi Kagome, Miss Nishisawa Kikyo, and Miss Fujisano Kagura! Congratulations!"
The entire stadium was alive with applause and excitement as Kagome, Kikyo and Kagura made their ways around the rink, smiling and waving as the fans threw flowers and stuffed animals down at them. After her final lap around, Kagome hurried to the locker rooms. As she was unlacing her skates, Kagura walked in.
"That gold is mine, Higurashi. Just because you got lucky in this mediocre competition doesn't mean you belong in the Olympics," Kagura commented, walking past her to her own locker.
Kagome looked up at her while she spoke, but as soon as she was done, she went back to unlacing her skates. She had been skating with Kagura for five years now, she knew exactly what kind of tricks she liked to play, and frankly, she didn't care about them. They never got to her, so she just continued to hurriedly dress herself and make her way down to where the women's skeleton track was.
"Kagome-san!" a joyful voice screamed at her before she was tackled by a little blur of black and yellow.
"Whoa there Rin!" Kagome huffed before smiling at the little girl.
"Rin heard from the voice box that Kagome-san will be on the National Team! Will Kagome-san really be playing in the O-limp-is?" Rin asked, her eyes wide with awe.
"Yes Rin, I will be this year. And it's pronounced O-lym-pics sweetie," Kagome giggled, ruffling her hair as she glanced around.
"Rin, are you here with the orphanage?" Kagome asked, not seeing anyone from the said organization around.
"Oh! No! Kagome-san, Rin got adopted!" the child practically screamed as she flashed her a big toothy grin.
Kagome blinked. She had been planning on adopting Rin after the games were over, since she would be able to spend more time with her...but someone had beaten her to it!
"Congratulations, Rin! I'm so happy for you!" she managed to say, smiling brightly. In truth, she was disappointed that she would not be able to adopt Rin as her own, but knowing that Rin was finally adopted made her feel happy. The little girl deserved a family.
"KAGOME!" a familiar voice called out. Before she could turn around, she was tackled to the ground by her over-zealous best friend. She found herself laying on the ground, covered by a very excited Sango and receiving awkward looks from the people walking by.
"Hi Rin!" Sango chirped happily as she sat on top of Kagome.
"Hi Sango-san!" Rin chirped back.
"How are you?" Sango asked, completely ignoring everyone else around them.
"Rin is good, but Rin has to go now before daddy gets mad. Goodbye Kagome-san!" Rin waved at them as she ran off into the crowd.
"Such a sweet girl," Sango sighed as she looked down at her friend.
"Jeez Sango, you're gonna kill me one of these days," she mumbled as she sat up, pushing Sango off to sit on the floor.
"I know, I'm sorry! But I was just so excited! I made it, Kagome! I'm on the National Skeleton Team!" Sango all but screamed.
"Sango, I'm so happy for you! That's great! We'll take home the gold in that for sure then!" Kagome cheered as Sango turned a bright red.
"What about you? Did you make it?" Sango asked, attempting to change the subject.
"Well..."Kagome trailed off, knowing what Sango would think.
"No...Really?" Sango gasped, looking at her friend.
"...I just happened to make the first seat on the National Team's Singles Skating!" Kagome sang out, enjoying the expression on Sango's face.
"YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!" Sango yelled so loud that Kagome started giggling.
"Okay, okay Sango! Give it a rest, I don't want to be deaf before the games start!" Kagome teased, poking her friend on the side.
"Oh, Kagome, this will be greeeaaat! We'll be competing together, we could probably room together, too! There are going to be so many cute guys there! I can't wait!" Sango sang more than said as she pulled Kagome up from the ground.
"Yes, yes, now let's get to registration," Kagome laughed, taking Sango's hand and leading them off towards the registration center.
"You know, Kagome, they say that the Olympics can change your life," Sango smiled.
"Yeah, well hopefully it does," Kagome sighed, "Kami knows that I need it."
Unknown to her, the Kamis were listening. Yebisu smiled as he heard the little one's wish.
'Be careful what you wish for, dear,' he thought, amused. This year was going to be interesting.

First off, Yebisu (or Ebisu) is the Japanese god of Fishing and Good Fortune. Kinda funny. But yea...
Okay, so I really like the premises of this story...and yea, I am not really sure how they judge ice-skating so...I tried looking it up but most of it was very vague. I hope I didn't butcher it too much >< I really can just see Sango as a skeleton athelte haha For those of you who don't know, the Skeleton is where this is one person and a sled, you haul ass to a ledge and jump on the sled and go racing down the trace. They use the same track as they do for the luge. Anyways, I hope you'll read and review!
