Author's note: Not gonna lie. Some chapters will be short. I don't think I'll be dragging this out as I have other fics that need to be finished. This is more of a Continuation w/o Kagome returning to the fuedal era. I like Inu Yasha and Kagome together, but I ship hard Sess/Kag after all these years.
==============
Kagome finished her prayer or Hatsumode at her family's shrine once most of the people had done their own prayers. While her friends had invited her out to a group dating out of obligation, for the fifth year in a row, she had declined. In fact, she had stopped accepting invitations for group dating for two years, and it had nothing to do with her old feelings for Inu Yasha.
The modern shrine priestess just had no stomach for dating these days. She needed substance that dating apps and her current generation couldn't provide. Maybe it was because she had been raised old fashioned? Maybe it was just her? Her prayers for the new year were for her family's well being, and her hope that her old friends in the feudal era had been happy.
Kagome was somewhat satisfied with her life. She had finished secondary school, and had been helping with the shrine full time since then. She actually enjoyed telling shrine visitors about the history that her family was a part of, and occasionally exorcises homes for those that believed in the old ways. Her grandpa had gotten her training under another more prestigious shrine to perform the necessary rituals expected of priests and priestesses. The difference was that she had started to make a name, since she actually had holy powers.
In these modern times, Kagome felt somewhat useful. She implemented what she had learned from Kaede and Miroku, while using what she learned. Honing her holy powers were a lot better and didn't need a bow and arrow to channel it.
However, even though she didn't pray for new love, she secretly hoped to find someone she could be open with. When she finished her prayer, she grabbed up a broom to sweep the shrine grounds so she could sleep in, instead of wake early and do that.
Before she started sweeping, she turned the Bluetooth on her phone, and activated her wireless headphones, so she could listen to music while she swept. She opened her music app and selected a classic rock channel, a guilty pleasure that also had helped her learn English better. Her friends thought it was a strange quirk, but Kagome had never run to the beat of the same tune as her friends. It kind of put a wall between them and her, just like the secrets she held from the time she had collected jewel shards in Japan's feudal times.
As she swept the stone pathways on the shrine grounds and bopped to another classic rock song, she started to get a feeling that she was being watched. She tried to ignore it, but after 45 minutes, she her senses realized that her spectator wasn't quite human. She paused and pulled her wireless head phones to her neck.
"Is someone there?" she called out.
She turned around slowly, carefully looking around. Nothing seems to be out of place. She had thought at first that maybe she was being sensitive or perhaps some last minute new year's shrine goers had come up to do their prayers. However, as she looked toward the steps, a tall figured stood there.
"May I help you? If you need to pray, the shrine is over there," Kagome called out to the figure.
"I'm not here to pray, priestess," the figure replied, and slowly walked towards her.
"Um, then what can I do for you?" she asked, somewhat weary, as the figure had a masculine voice.
"I'm here for you," the figure answered.
"Me? Why?" Kagome wondered out loud, feeling her nerves build.
"Calm, priestess. You know me. We fought together many many years ago against the spider," they said.
"Stop!" Kagome panicked, holding the broom up.
The broom glowed a bright pink, bringing more light into the dim shrine courtyard. Kagome squinted to make out the figure of the male.
"I've been waiting centuries for you, Kagome. Can you cease your holy powers and let this Sesshoumaru approach?" the male asked.
At that, Kagome dropped her broom, but her hands were illuminated in pink.
"S-s-Sess-hou-maru?" she stuttered. "How is this possible?"
"You think a powerful demon such as this Sesshoumaru would've allowed the age of humans to vanquish this One?" he said, as Kagome finally got a better glimpse of him.
The statuesque demon lord had long dark locks, but his golden eyes glinted in the light that her powers provided. Kagome's throat ran dry. After all this time, she had come across young minor fox demons, but nothing that had a god-like power that the great dog demon had ever had. Her last memories of Sesshoumaru had been of him regaining his arm in a most spectacular way, and then assisting her within Naraku's huge spider innards.
The modern shrine priestess's knees grew weak, and she felt herself sink onto the stone path, as tears sprouted from her eyes. The tears weren't of fear, but of happiness.
The dog demon lord approached her kneeled form until he was a few feet. He held a clawed hand out, and she slowly took hold of it. Instead of seeing his infamous pokerface, he had a faint smile. He was still as gorgeous as ever. She had thought that since the day she had seen him standing on the shoulder of the giant demon, before luring Inu Yasha into thinking his mother had come back to life.
"I've been waiting for you a long time," he admitted.
"Me?" she asked, extremely dumfounded.
Sesshoumaru scroffed, "What other female would I ever make time to visit?"
"Wut?!" Kagome replied dumbly.
The demon lord chuckled... actually chuckled, to Kagome's frazzled astonishment.
"I won't stay long. However, will you humor this One and join him for a cup of coffee or tea?" he asked, as he assisted Kagome up from her previous kneeling state.
In all of her wild imagination, Kagome had never thought she would see anyone that she had known from her time when she had put the Jewel of Four Souls together. Sesshoumaru had never been in any of her imagined scenarios. Yet, here he was in front of her, and asking her for her time, even for a cup of coffee. Her heart beat fast in her chest, and her mouth was dry.
It took a few moments before she croaked out,"Y-yeah, sure."
"Good. Take my card and call or text my personal number when you'd like to meet up," he said, and then procured a business card from his coat pocket.
He brought Kagome's hand to his mouth and kissed her knuckles, before carefully placing it in her hand. By this time, Kagome's eyes were wide, and it seemed her internal clock had slowed down. Sesshoumaru closed her fingers over the card, while smirking, and then placed her hand near her chest.
Kagome felt super dumb, and for once, didn't have a response as the demon lord left her. She stood there in a strange stupor, watching him leave. Once he had descended the shrine steps until she couldn't see him, it seemed that the cogs in her brain had restarted, and she took a deep breath.
"Wut? Wut? Wut?!" she dumbly cried out. "Oh my friggin' god. Hold the phone!"
Rather than picking up the broom, and finishing the sweeping, she ran to the house, and on up to her room. Once she got to her room, she dived into her bed and then screamed into her pillow, trying to understand what had just happened, and why she had acted like a nimcompoop un front of a being like Sesshoumaru.
